Nineteen (19) items in all, including, 11 clay tablets, 2 clay cones, and 6 seals. The tablets are in mostly good to fine condition and come from three periods, Ur III or Neo-Sumerian (2112-2004 bc), Old Babylonian (ca. 2000-1600 bc), and Middle Babylonian or Kassite (ca. 1400-1100 bc). All are administrative in nature. Except for one poorly preserved tablet in its envelope, all are mostly legible and many datable. The cones are not particularly interesting, though one is in fine condition and clearly dated to the king whose building project is being commemorated. The seals cover a wide range from mid-third millennium bc to mid-first millennium ad. All are cylinders except the latest, Sassanian, example. Periods represented include: Early Dynastic (ca. 2900-2340 bc), Akkadian (ca. 2340-2250), Post-Akkadian (ca. 2250-2112), Ur III (2112-2004), Old Babylonian (ca. 2000-1600), and Sassanian (224-651 ad). An Ur III seal features the name of a royal official. All are in fine condition. Comprising: i) Clay administrative tablet with ca. 18 lines regarding, inter alia, receipts of clothing and beer. Probably Ur III (2112-2004), or Old Babylonian (ca. 2000-1600) at latest. Complete and in fine condition. ii) Old Babylonian (ca. 2000-1600 bc) administrative tablet with envelope. Has impressions from a cylinder seal. Nearly complete and in poor condition. iii) Small clay administrative tablet with 10-11 lines regarding donkeys. Ur III or Old Babylonian (2112-1600 bc). Complete and in good condition. iv) Small clay administrative tablet with 8 lines regarding DUL3-LUM. Old Babylonian (2000-1600 bc). Complete and in good condition. v) Sealed clay administrative tablet (receipt for goods) from Ur III (2112-2004). Impressed with seal belonging to Lu-kalla, a scribe. Complete and in fine condition. Impression features goddess leading worshiper to a seated god. vi) Sealed Ur III period (2112-2004 bc) administrative tablet (receipt for goods) with ca. 18 lines. Complete (with some damage to obverse) in good to fine condition. Impressed with seal belonging to a scribe. vii) Sealed Ur III period (2112-2004 bc) administrative tablet (concerns workers) with ca. 7 lines. Dated to first year of king Amar-Sin (ca. 2047 bc). viii) Small Ur III period (2112-2004 bc) administrative tablet (receipt of goods). Dated to year 5 of king Shu-Sin (ca. 2034 bc). Complete and in fine condition. ix) Uninscribed cylinder seal of soft, whitish stone (calcite, limestone?) with a Post-Akkadian/Ur III (2200-2004 bc) contest scene depicting combat between two men and a rampant lion. The seal is in good condition, though the quality of the carving is rather crude. x) Middle Babylonian (Kassite) administrative tablet with ca. 15 lines concerning quantities of gold. Nearly complete and in good condition. Dates to ca. 1400-1100 bc. xi) Middle Babylonian (Kassite) administrative tablet with ca. 15 lines concerning silver. Nearly complete and in fair condition. Dates to ca. 1400-11000 bc. xii) Middle Babylonian (Kassite) administrative tablet with ca. 18 lines. Nearly complete and in poor to fair condition. Significant surface damage. Dates to ca. 1400-1100 bc. xiii) Medium-sized clay cone with building inscription (two columns, ca. 20 lines), Old Babylonian, ca. 2000-1600 bc. Complete and in fair to good condition. xiv) Uninscribed Akkadian or Sargonic period (ca. 2340-2250 BC) cylinder seal of black stone (onyx?). Scene depicts a robed figure approaching a seated god(?), followed by two standing attendants, with a crescent in the field above. The figures are probably all gods, but the headdresses are not completely convincing as divine type and look less like horns than they perhaps should. Complete and in fine condition. xv) Inscribed Ur III period (2112-2004 bc) cylinder seal in greenish mottled serpentine(?) stone. Design has goddess presenting worshiper to a seated king. Seal belonged to Shu-u'u, an official of the king. xvi) Small uninscribed Old Babylonian (2000-1600 bc) cylinder seal featuring the king as warrior standing between two goddesses. Stone is perhaps hematite, but is predominantly matte red. xvii) Uninscribed carnelian (?) stamp seal featuring a prancing horse. Appears to be Sassanian (ca. 224-651 ad). The stone is a milky-orangey-pink and is pierced. xviii) Small clay cone with building inscription (nine lines) of Sin-kashid, an Old Babylonian king from the city of Uruk, ca. 1870 bc. Complete and in fine condition. xix) Uninscribed calcite or chalcedony (? white w/brown stone) featuring two rows of horned animals with an eagle above. Dates to the Early Dynastic period, ca. 2900-2340 bc. Sotheby's is grateful to Dr. Christopher Monroe, Department of Seals and Tablets, Pierpont Morgan Library, for his generous assistance with the description of this and the following four lots.»
